BRONZE BEST FOR CHANU
“I dislike going down the mountain,” says sculptor Louis Chanu
in his garden next to his art studio in Klipkop. “It always
makes me grumpy. I am a devoted resident of Grabouw.”
Chanu is currently exhibiting a collection of his bronze
sculptures at the Art Gallery, Kanonkop Wine Estate, close to
Stellenbosch. His work has over the past few years fast gained
recognition in South Africa and internationally. Johan Rupert
recently bought a Chanu bronze at a Charity Auction at the
Arabella Golf Estate where some of his sculptures fetched record
prices.
Chanu has had a passion for sculpting since he was a child. He
is constantly investigating how to transform shapes into 3
dimensionality, using different materials. Chanu’s work ranges
from realistic figures to abstract and organic shapes.
His garden sculpture business has enabled him financially to
pursue his passion of making sculptures in wax and then
transforming them into bronze. He is working towards a major
solo exhibition of bronzes with two collections: “People of
Africa” and a series of 15 bronzes “Women of our Time”.
His works are high in demand from collectors in England,
Scotland, France and Holland.
Chanu says he loves living in Grabouw with his wife, Beth and
three children. His other passion is flying and he has been
flying paragliders and paramotors for the past 15 years, whilst
recently having completed building his own 2-seater aircraft.
The Chanu Studio will take part in the Elgin Open Gardens
November 1 and 2 weekend when most of his bronze sculptures will
be on exhibit.
